An axe is quite a simple tool. It consists of a blade and an axe handle. However, there are many axe types, shapes and sizes.
Usually, soldiers at the frontline need the so-called cleavers, the axes with a heavy blade sharpened at a wide angle. When hitting a tree, such an axe will push apart the wood fibers, which in turn will help to cut down trees and chop firewood efficiently and will also prevent the blade from getting stuck inside the tree.
You should not buy tactical axes, tomahawks and multitool tourist axes for cutting trees and chopping firewood. They have completely different purposes and would be ineffective.
Generally, the heavier the blade, the more force it will deliver, but that does not mean that the heaviest axes are the best choice. Working with an axe that is too heavy will quickly tire you, especially when chopping firewood, so for everyday use it is better to use axes weighing 0.6-1.2 kg.
