There are many types of heating pads available on the market. First of all, it is necessary to distinguish between disposable and reusable ones.
Disposable heating pads work by oxidizing the contents in the air, so when purchasing, it is important to check if the package is tightly sealed. They are compact, lightweight, easy to use, and warm well. Their only drawback is that they are disposable. If a person is at the front for a long time, then the supply of disposable heating pads may run out, leaving the military alone with the cold.
There are three types of reusable heating pads:
- Salt pads work by the chemical reaction of crystallization. While the reaction takes place (20-40 minutes, depending on the size), they give off heat. They should be boiled for 5-15 minutes for repeated use. They are cheap but are not suitable for frontline conditions as they are moderately heavy and bulky, do not retain heat for a long time, and their repeated use requires burning a lot of fuel for boiling.
- Catalytic pads work by the slow burning of solid or liquid fuel. They are much more compact than the salt ones, they retain heat for 6-12 hours, depending on the fuel amount. The key issues are fuel availability and difficulty of use; the catalyst usually needs to be ignited, which can be difficult to do in cold and windy conditions.
- Electric pads work by converting electrical energy into thermal energy. Usually, they are the best choice for the military for many reasons. First, unlike other types of heating pads, they can be turned on and off when needed, consuming the power only when it is really needed. Secondly, they are the easiest to use; all you should do is just press a button. Thirdly, electric heating pads also usually have the function of a power bank, freeing up space in the backpack, so the soldier does not need to carry both devices separately.
We recommend reusable heating pads from the Ocoopa company; they are sold all over the world and have proven themselves well.
As for disposable warmers, the products of HotHands, Thermopad, and TakeHot companies are well-known and dependable.
